Before submitting an article or recipe to Simply Whole, you are required to read the usage agreement and style guidelines below. Please take your time before submitting, as having this information will greatly increase the chances of your work being published.
Usage Agreement
The Simply Whole Audience
To get a good feel for the Simply Whole audience, read Simply Whole! Be detailed, use personal stories when applicable, and keep things as positive as possible. When the topic necessitates negativity, be fair and kind. Don’t assume that the audience knows as much as you do on a topic. Keep things simple – don’t dumb anything down, but start at the beginning and then take the reader in-depth on the topic, defining terms and explaning as you go. Include a call to action that helps the reader improve their life.
Article Rights
Simply Whole reserves all use rights to anything we publish in any form. However, we are happy for you to publish your work elsewhere as long as the text is changed by at least 20 percent, the first paragraph is changed significantly, and the title of the article is completely changed meaningfully. You may not use our edits, but may use your own draft. Lastly, you must link back to where the article initially appeared on Simply Whole. We do not unpublish articles at the writer’s request.
Editing Process
Even the most well-written articles may need some tailoring in order to fit our audience or the physical layout of our website. We will use your own images where possible, but reserve the right to choose additional and/or replacement images for the final publication based on copyright issues or aesthetics. If any edits beyond images and grammatical changes are needed, we will get your approval before publishing. Expect edits.
Payment
We do not pay per article. We hope that you’ll recognize having your article published and shared with our network and through partner networks as great publicity. It’ll be a great link for your journalist portfolio, and/or some additional traffic to your own website or blog.
Though we don’t pay per article, there are benefits to becoming a regular contributor, including the possibility of joining our team in profit-sharing. Please Contact Us for more information.
Style Guide
Make sure your artcile adheres to everything below, or your article will not be accepted.
Only one space after periods; not two.
All numbers above nine are written numerically, numbers nine and below are spelled out. The only exception is at the beginning of a sentence, in which all numbers are spelled out.
Never put words in bold or ALL CAPS for emphasis. Italicize for emphasis.
Break up long paragraphs into shorter paragraphs. For online reading, this is much easier on the eye and will keep people reading your article longer befor clicking away.
Make sure you're familiar with libel/slander and plagiarism laws. We will not knowingly publish anything remotely close to libel or plagiarism.
All M Dashes need to be formatted as “—,” not “- -.” To make a proper M dash: option+shift+ – dash for Mac; three short dashes in row (—) no spaces between dashes or between the em dash and the two words. This will automatically convert it to an M dash on a PC.
Be consistent with oxford comma usages. Either use them in every instance or never use them.
Don't use ampersands (&) in titles; spell out the word "and."
Always include a sub-title. This will do us both favors, as your article will receive more traffic due to automatic search engine optimization.
Please proof read and have a friend do a peer edit for you. If possible, we'd prefer all submissions to be free of typos and grammatical errors. This makes our job easier, and allows us to spend more time growing the Simply Whole audience and promoting your great work!
