What Happens When You Combine HBOT and Red Light Therapy?
Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT) and Red Light Therapy (RLT) are two non-invasive therapies that are becoming popularized in both the alternative/holistic healthcare and the western medical field. Because both play a role in delivering and carrying oxygen (through different means), I have been wondering what would happen if they are used in conjunction. I went on the hunt for clinical studies and empirical evidence. This page contains a short summary of what I found. Below the video, I’ll share my own experience as well as info on the RLT device I chose (after an embarrassing amount of research as an over-thinker)
What is Hyperbaric Oxygen Therapy (HBOT)?
HBOT is like giving your cells a supercharge of oxygen. By sitting in a pressurized chamber and breathing pure oxygen, your body can deliver more oxygen to areas that need it most—especially tissues with poor blood flow. This is especially helpful for accelerated healing after injuries, surgeries, and concussion. HBOT also reduces inflammation, helps tissues grow, and even boosts your immune system to fight off infections more effectively.
What is Red Light Therapy (RLT)?
RLT uses far- and near-infrared light to boost your cells’ energy production and improve blood flow. Think of it as a power-up for your body’s mitochondria—the tiny “batteries” in your cells. RLT also reduces inflammation and promotes healing by improving oxygen delivery and circulation.
Why Combine HBOT and RLT?
These therapies are powerful on their own, but when used together, they work even better. Here’s how:
- More Energy for Your Cells: HBOT and RLT both increase ATP (your body’s energy currency), giving your cells the fuel they need to heal and grow.
- Fighting Free Radical Damage: Both treatments activate antioxidants like glutathione and melatonin, which help your body combat damage from oxidative stress.
- Reducing Inflammation: They calm down overactive inflammation, which helps your body repair itself more efficiently.
More oxygen + more blood flow and ATP = Superior Results
Dr. Zayd Ratansi, an expert in these therapies, often combines HBOT and RLT for targeted treatments. For example, athletes use them to recover faster from injuries, and patients preparing for surgery heal more quickly. By delivering oxygen and energy where it’s needed most, these therapies create the perfect environment for your body to heal itself.
Potential Synergistic Benefits:
-
Enhanced Healing and Recovery: Combining HBOT and RLT may accelerate healing processes by increasing oxygen delivery and cellular energy production. This combination has been suggested to improve recovery from injuries and reduce inflammation.
-
Improved Skin Health: The combination of these therapies is believed to enhance collagen production and blood flow, potentially improving skin texture and reducing signs of aging.
-
Pain Reduction: Both therapies have been associated with pain relief, and their combined use may offer enhanced benefits for individuals suffering from chronic pain conditions.
The Hyperbaric + Red Light Difference:
What Happened When I Tried It:
I spent a lot of time researching Red Light Therapy device models. A lot of them are corded, which means you wouldn’t be able to use them in the HBO chamber. A lot of models emit extremely high EMF (electromagnetic fields that can be harmful to cell health).
So in my searching, this is the criterion I looked for:
- Can be used inside your chamber and has longest battery life
- Most powerful irradiance I could find (80% higher than the next leading brand)
- Emits almost no EMFs
- Both near infrared and far infrared settings (or both at same time)
- Eligible for HSA/FSA as an FDA-registered medical device.
The one that hands-down fit the bill for me was Lumebox. I ordered one to test it out a few months ago. And then I partnered with them to bring you a discount I’m very pleased with.
I have been testing it out extensively in conjunction with HBOT and have had great results in knocking back a threatening respiratory virus that others in my family were very ill from. As I started getting the first symptoms, I immediately started using the red light on both my throat and lungs a couple of times a day while in the HBOT. I chose not to include any of my normal go-to cold and flu busters, so that I could isolate my new red light therapy in conjunction with HBOT. The cough that had started did not progress at all, whereas for others in my family, it led to a deep and lasting cough that rattled in their lungs.
I bought one as a gift for someone who immediately tried it on a fungal infection that will not go away (for years) despite multiple rounds of prescription drugs to try and kill it. She started seeing improvements after only a couple of uses.
I have also been using it on my gut, which has been quite inflamed due to my holiday eating and other gut illnesses I have going on. It is doing a great job of soothing the pain symptoms, but because I know how red light works on mitochondria, I know the pain relief is indicative of improving intestinal barrier protection and mucosal immune response.
So far, these are my PERSONAL results. I’m excited to use it for everyday skin health and creating more ATP, and also having it handy for very targeted results as Dr. Ratansi explains in the video above, like injury healing and other preventive uses.
If you’re not quite ready to purchase a hyperbaric chamber, but in the meantime you’ve been wanting a life-changing helper for delivering oxygen, decreasing inflammation, and increasing mitochondria health, I highly suggest starting with a red light device.
A 45% Discount
I was able to partner with LumeBox in order to get a wholesale discount on this infrared device. It retails for $629.00. If you use the discount code simplywholelife or use this direct link, you will receive a 45% discount starting January 2, 2025 until January 5th.
