Almond milk is one fantastic alternative to dairy milk for those who have dairy sensitivities or who avoid dairy for health reasons. Some of the benefits of almond milk, as opposed to dairy milk, are:
- Only 60 calories per 8 oz.
- Much lower sugar content than dairy milk and other store-bought milks
- Very low carb
- Great for bone health: 8 oz. contains 30% of your calcium for the day, plus 20% of your required vitamin D.
- High in vitamin E which is great for skin and hair health
I know what you’re thinking… “I don’t have time to make milk from scratch every week!”
Think again! Do you have just one minute? Thought so! Here’s how to make nutritious, delicious almond milk at home:
- Soak 1 cup of almonds overnight (or for at least 8 hours), in a covered glass bowl or pitcher. The almonds will double in size over night. Soaking almonds also sprouts them, which makes them come alive, and their nutrient content explodes. They also become sweeter and more flavorful.
- Rinse the almonds in the morning.
- Add the almonds to your Blendtec blender, or another high power blender. Add 4 cups of filtered water. Blend on high speed for 60-90 seconds.
- Pour milk into a nut milk bag. The bag is going to filter out all the milk and leave the almond pulp. (Watch the video for this step!)
We make almond milk about once per week, or whenever we run out. It will keep in the fridge for up to one week. Store it in a glass mason jar with a lid, or any other handy one-quart container.
Almond Milk Uses:
- Pour it over granola instead of boxed cereal
- Use it as the liquid started for your green smoothies and shakes
- Use it in cooking and baking in place of cow’s milk
- Drink it! Or dip healthy cookies in it
What a terrific video! I always buy mine… until now! I believe I actually have time to do this! We’ve always enjoyed soaked almonds for healthy snacks in the past, so now I can make the milk too! Just didn’t think it was so easy! So glad you did it on video!
Great video.. I concur with the previous post. I love almond milk and coconut milk and have been giving it to my 1 year old grandaughter instead of cows milk. I too did not realize it was so easy. Another use for my Vitamix 🙂 Guess I ‘ll start making it now instead of buying. Did n’t realize there was sugar in storebought. Thanks!
can you do anything with the pulp? seems sad to throw away nuts!
never mind! I read the post, but I just watched the video, thanks for the advice 🙂
Great Job McKenna… its nice to be able to hear your voice and see you in action! You also look extremely healthy and beautiful! 🙂 Thanks for sharing. Like everyone else, making milk isn’t as hard as once thought! I need a new blender!
Thank you, Andrea! You’re so sweet. And yes, this is one of those things that are EASY to change.
This is awesome McKenna, I can do this and I am looking forward on how to make the cookies. Never knew it was that easy!! Thanks!!
Great video McKenna – I shall be forwarding that to my friend who’s recently found out that she’s totally intolerant to all dairy. Thanks 🙂
I will definitely try this. Any suggestions on where to get good almonds in bulk?
Sam’s Club, Costco, or do a Google search for “your state group buy raw almonds” (the last option will get you a LOTTTT of almonds)
LOVE this McKenna!!! Thanks for sharing!
OMG!! That was totally cool – I never realized it was so easy! And you looked like a pro for a firsttimer!
Coming back for more!
Paul.
Thanks Paul! Made my afternoon. I hope to improve over time. We are, of course, our own worst critics 🙂
Great video and wonderful information! Sounds so good! Thanks!
This is great McKenna! Awesome info! Thanks!

Awesome thanks for the video as I love almond milk and now I will make it myself.
Very nice article and right to the point. I am not sure if this is actually the best place to ask but do you guys have any ideea where to get some professional writers? Thanks in advance 🙂
I do consider all of the concepts you’ve presented in your post. They’re really convincing and will definitely work. Still, the posts are too short for beginners. Could you please lengthen them a little from subsequent time? Thanks for the post.
WONDERFUL Post.thanks for share..more wait .. …
I savour, lead to I found just what I used to be looking for. You have ended my 4 day lengthy hunt! God Bless you man. Have a nice day. Bye
Very interesting subject, thank you for putting up.
LOVE this! We so need to do this in our house. 🙂 What blender do you recommend and where can I get one that my nuts won’t shred?
Elise, this is the blender I recommend above all others. It’s definitely one to save up for… but it is a blender, a wheat grinder, ice cream maker, hot soup maker, it also makes salsas and peanut/almond butter, etc. NOTHING can shred this blender! Get a refurbished one… you’ll save $ and their warranty is just as fantastic! http://bit.ly/lmzMP6
McKenna,
I have been doing green smoothies almost daily now for 4 weeks! I feel so good when I get one in my day! I missed the GREAT sale they had on Blendtec blenders at Costco unfortunately and would LOVE to try this Almond Milk. Any idea of how often the blenders go on sale??
It’s pretty random, Marcia… but I usually get advanced notice, so I’ll let you know! Another great option is to get a refurbished one directly from blendtec. Sometimes I’m wary of refurbished things, but in this case they still offer their full warranty, so I’d take the savings! WOW! Now that is what you call a well written article, it has everything in it that as a reader you want to know. Keep up the good work and continue to post great articles like this one.
I was wondering if you had any advice on where to buy almonds so that it would cost less to make your own than to just buy the SILK brand. I would love to make it myself but I am having a hard time finding almonds cheap enough to make it worth it.
Bulk Barn I would imagine would have the best prices, especially if you manage to get them on sale
Great video! For some reason I always thought making Almond milk was more complicated. Where do you get the nut milk bag? or can you use cheesecloth as an alternative?
Also will a regular blender not work? Must it be a BlendTec?
Hey!
How do you dry out the almond pulp for flour?
Thanks!
